Option Buyer vs Option Seller: Which One Should You Be?

Every student asks me this in the first class. "Sir, buying or selling?" I always say: first tell me how much you can lose. Then we will talk.

I like to trade options in Nifty 50. I have taught more than 21,000 students in 9+ years. One thing is common in all of them. The ones who last are the ones with discipline (anushasan), not the ones with big capital.

Quick Answer: An option buyer pays premium, has limited risk and unlimited profit potential, but wins less often. An option seller collects premium, wins more often, but can lose a lot if the stop-loss is ignored. Neither is "better". Pick the one that fits your capital, your patience (sabr) and your risk limit.

What Is the Difference Between Option Buyer vs Option Seller?

The buyer pays premium and risks only that premium. The seller receives premium and takes on the larger risk. This is the whole Option Buyer vs Option Seller game.

Why Reward to Risk Ratio Matters More Than Win Rate

Reward to Risk Ratio tells you how many rupees you aim to make for every rupee you risk. A trader with 40% accuracy can still earn if the ratio is good.

Many beginners chase "90% accuracy". I tell them: that is a trap. A seller with 90% wins and one huge loss can erase everything.

How Do I Find a Good Entry? CPR Indicator and Gift Nifty Chart

The CPR indicator (Central Pivot Range) is built from the previous day's High, Low and Close. A narrow CPR often hints at a trending day. Because we know it before the market opens, I call it a Leading Indicator. Most other indicators lag behind price.

Formula, simple: Pivot = (H + L + C) รท 3. BC = (H + L) รท 2. TC = (Pivot โˆ’ BC) + Pivot.

Example: previous High 25,120, Low 24,920, Close 25,040. Pivot = 25,026.7, BC = 25,020, TC = 25,033.3. The width is only about 13 points. That is a narrow CPR. I would expect a move, not a sideways day.

Before 9:15 AM, I also check the Gift Nifty chart. It shows where the market may open. If Gift Nifty is far above or below CPR, I expect a gap. A gap day needs extra care for sellers.

What Is an Elephant Candle and How Do I Use It in the Opening Trade?

An Elephant Candle is a very large-bodied candle with tiny wicks. It shows strong one-sided force. It is often the start of a Boom, a fast and sharp move.

My Opening Trade rule is simple. I do not rush at 9:15. I wait for the first 15-minute candle. If a strong Elephant Candle closes above TC with a narrow CPR, buyers get a good setup. If it closes below BC, I look at puts.

  • Entry: Break of the Elephant Candle high (for calls).
  • Confirmation: 15-minute close beyond CPR.
  • Stop-loss: Below the candle low, or a fixed premium stop.
  • Target: Next support or resistance, minimum 1 : 2.
  • Invalidation: Price closes back inside CPR.
  • When NOT to trade: Wide CPR, big event days, or no clear candle.

Can I Use the Same Method for Commodity and Gold Trading?

Yes. CPR, Elephant Candle and risk rules work the same in Commodity markets like MCX Gold, Silver and Crude. Price is price.

In Gold trading, moves can be sharp around global news. Check the lot size and margin on the MCX site before you trade, because they change. Keep your stop-loss tighter than you think. Gold does not forgive a lazy trader.

Option Buyer vs Option Seller: Who Should Choose What?

Choose buying if your capital is small and you can accept many small stop-losses. Choose selling only if you have enough margin, strict stop-loss habits and a position size based on risk.

My rule for students: Risk only 1% to 2% of capital on one trade. Write the stop-loss before you click. Patience (sabr) means waiting for the setup, not forcing a trade because you are bored.

Common Mistakes and Fixes

MistakeFix
Buying cheap far OTM options hoping for a lotteryTrade near-the-money with a defined stop-loss.
Selling without stop-lossFix premium or spot stop before entry.
Revenge trading after a loss (nuksan)Stop for the day after your daily loss limit.
Trading every candleTake only CPR plus Elephant Candle setups.
Risk Warning: Option selling can cause very large losses. Option buying can lose 100% of premium. Keep your size small.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is option buying or option selling more profitable?

Neither is automatically more profitable. Profit depends on your Reward to Risk Ratio, discipline and position sizing, not on the side you pick.

What is CPR in trading?

CPR is the Central Pivot Range, made from the previous day's High, Low and Close. A narrow range often signals a trending day; a wide one signals a sideways day.

Why is CPR called a Leading Indicator?

Because it is calculated before the market opens. You get the levels first and price reacts later.

What is an Elephant Candle?

A big-bodied candle with very small wicks that shows strong buying or selling. I use it with CPR to confirm an Opening Trade.

Why should I check the Gift Nifty chart?

It trades before NSE opens and gives a clue about the opening gap. It is a guide, not a guarantee.
